Mooney Breaks 60HH State Record at NBNI

New Balance Indoor Nationals

There are so many outstanding results taking place at New Balance Nationals Indoors in Boston, that if you blink you just might miss something historic. MySportsResults has you covered and continues to scour the results for our outstanding Connecticut athletes so you don’t have to. Keep reading to see what was happening on Saturday at New Balance Nationals Indoors.

History was made in only the second event of the day. Josh Mooney of Stonington, the State Open and New England 55mHH champion moved up to the international distance of 60mHH and seemed to like the extra distance. After tying Miles Bradley’s state record with a 7.26 at the State Open he claimed the 60mHH record for his own, running 7.80 to sail out of the prelims and into the semifinals with the second fastest time of the day. Bradley, one of the greatest athletes to ever come through CT, was fourth at National Scholastic Indoor with a time of 7.88 in 2005. Summing up what most CT track fans were feeling was oneTwitter user who exclaimed “Myles Bradley is a legend. What a record to break!”

The interesting thing is, in every meet Mooney has run trials and finals, he has gotten faster in the next round. In the semi finals, he duplicated his performance and will be going into the finals only .04 seconds behind top seed Abdoul Sy-Savane from Georgia.

Connecticut athletes absolutely shined in the pentathlon on Saturday. Michael Johnson used his considerable talents to score 3595 points over the five events to finish 3rd and grab an All American medal. He moved ahead of Adam Polite and Tyler Latham in the all time CT list to record the second best score among CT athletes. The only athlete ahead of him was former NCAA decathlon record holder and US national team member Brian Brophy of Manchester. The Lewis Mills senior, who is competing for the Lebron Athletic Club started off the event and added his name to the all time CT record list in the 60mHH. His time of 8.17 is the 9th fastest performance in state history. He high jumped 5’10.5, threw the shot 38’9.75 and long jumped 21’.5. Then, after a long day, he finished off with a 1000m race to test his endurance, finishing in 2:50.15.

Veteran multi event athlete Avery Cipcic improved 212 points from his score last year when he was 4th at NBNI but moved back two spots in this highly competitive field. His 6th place finish with 3485 points earned him a second straight All American season and moved him to #7 in the list of All Time CT pentathletes. The Suffield senior had a huge indoor PR in the high jump, going from 6 ft, 2 inches to 6’5.5.

State Open runner up in the 55m and long jump, Audrey Kozak used her explosive power to also earn All American status with a score of 3228, the #4 best total in CT history. The Shelton senior, competing for Lebron Athletic Club, will join Johnson and Mooney at UConn next year. She ran the 60mHH in 9.29, high jumped 5’0.5, threw the shot 24’5..5, long jumped 18’4.5” and ran the 800m in 2:30.40.

Finishing one place behind and just missing out on All American status was Bethel’s Rosie Volpintesta. She scored 3220 to become the 5th best pentathlete in CT history, Also competing for the Lebron Athletic Track Club was Lewis Mills’ Gabriella Zeller who finished 11th. Her score of 3164 was the 6th best score in state history.

State Open high jump champion Dar Jankovic of E.O. Smith came within an inch of his lifetime best, cleared 6 ft, 7 inches to become the NBNI runner up. and earn All American status.

Top 24 got to move on to Sunday’s semi finals and New England 55m champion Noble Gongon of Simsbury made his way into the semi finals with a 24th place finish in the prelims of the 60m dash. His time of 6.94 ties Bloomfield’s Kenneth Walker as the 4th fastest in state history. Cheshire’s Colin Brown just missed out on the semifinals finishing in 30th place with a time of 6.99 to become the 12 fastest runner in CT history.

Having the race of his life was Xavier junior, Stylz Mitchell who finished 2nd in the Rising Stars prelims to move onto the semifinals. Running a time of 6.96 and he now becomes the 6th fastest CT 60m runner and also made the finals to be held Sunday afternoon.

All season long, Xavier has been scoring huge points in the distance events and were crowned State Open and New England champions in the 4x800m. They proved they belong at the national level taking 4th place in the 4xmile with a time of 17:41.99. The team, running under the banner of South Farms Track Club included sophomore Owen Martin, senior Alex Ushchak, sophomore Jack Ouellette and senior Nick Cassarino broke a 10 year old school record and became the 5th fastest team in state history.

Danbury, whose 2008 team won Nationals and set the state record of 17:28.47 just missed scoring by about one second. They finished 7th with a time of 17:53.93.

The girls distance events are going to be amazing the next few years with a number of underclassmen building up incredible resumes already this season. Freshman Chase Gilbert became the 5th fastest girl in state history and she has three years to go to chase Hannah Debalsi’s state record of 16:32.26. She finished in 11th place in 17:23.23 with Cheshire junior one place behind in 17:33.54 to become the 9th ranked CT runner in this race, usually only run at Nationals.

If it looks like the distance events have been hot on the girls side, the middle distance runners are saying “you ain’t seen nothing yet.” State Open cross country champion Brooke Strauss is showing that she has some foot speed, running a PR of 2:11.75 to take 12th in the championship 800m. She not only took over the state lead but ran the 4th fastest time in state history. The Glastonbury sophomore will have two more years to chase Danae Rivers’ state record of 2:07.54. But if she wants to break it, she might have to battle Gabby Hernandez of E.O. Smith who is fresh off anchoring the 6th place sprint medley team the night before. The junior took 24th in 2:14.01, about a second slower than she split in the SMR. But don’t overlook sophomore Liv Sherry of Conard, who won the State Open 1000m title in her first season of indoor track. Sherry cracked into the top 10 in the All Time CT list running 2:14.10 to finish

Another all time CT performance was reached by Bloomfield’s Laniyah Henderson who triple jumped 39’1.0” to win the Rising Stars section. The senior was third at the State Open last spring and improved upon her lifetime best by nearly two feet to become the second best jumper in CT history. Only Nicole Toney’s 23 year old state record of 40’4” is in front of her on the indoor track list. But now she will set her sights on Toney’s outdoor state record of 40-4.25.

Avery Rueckert of Old Saybrook was the State Open runner up in the 300m, took 35th in the 200m with a time of 25.13. The time puts the senior in the number eight spot among CT all time bests.

By chance, Dylan Sheehan of Lyme Old Lyme had the opportunity to compete in two meets this weekend. He finished 13th at Nike Indoor Nationals in the weight throw with a throw of 61’5”. But then, the senior traveled about 3 ½ hours from the New York Armory to The Track in Boston and popped off another PR to take 11th with a throw of 63’10.5” moving him from the 11th best throw in state history to finish off his high school career at #8 All Time.

Don’t worry Nike Indoor National athletes. MSR is in the process of pulling together all the results of CT athletes in the meet at the Armory in New York City.
